Tired of Baby Shower games? Start decorating blocks for the baby instead. My friend and coworker was expecting and it came time for us to plan a baby shower for her at work. With Baby Mama and Baby Daddy working for the same company, this was going to be a co-ed baby shower that the whole company was invited to. Most of the guys were already complaining about having to play baby shower games – and so were some of the girls. So we wanted to do something different and creative and that the baby could actually use.
After a bit of research, we had found it! We’ll have everyone decorate their own baby blocks. It was not only fun and creative, but easy enough for everyone to do. Here’s the supplies you need to set up a station at the baby shower.
Supplies:
- 2×2 wooden blocks
- Sandpaper/Sander
- Sharpies – you can use different size tips if you want
- Pencils
- Small Post-it notes
- Vermont Natural Coatings Sealant
Prep To Do Before the Baby Shower:
- Double check your RSVP list to make sure you have enough blocks and sharpies for everyone to decorate their own block. We had bought several packs of sharpies so each person would have several colors at the same time, since this was the only entertainment (besides food and opening gifts :).
- Check all the blocks to make sure they have smooth edges and corners. If you feel any unsafe rough spots, use your sandpaper/sander to smooth out. Remember these are for the baby to play with.
- Decide on a theme so it gives everyone some inspiration to start decorating. We did letters of the alphabet and any extra blocks were free for all. We wanted at least a full set of the alphabet for the baby, so we assigned specific letters to spell out the baby’s name.
- If you decide to designate a block to a letter then you’ll need to stick a post-it on the block and write the letter. It’s an easy way to make sure you got all the letters covered.
Pro Mom Tip: Decorate an example beforehand. This also comes in handy in case you don’t have time to decorate while hosting the shower.
Baby Shower Setup:
1. Set up a specific table just for decorating the blocks. Stack the blocks up and make sure the post-it notes can be seen. We stacked them on top of each other more like a big pyramid to add interest. If you decide to do the blocks with letters, make sure to put all those on the table first and put the extras out when you run out of blocks.
2. Lay out the sharpies in front of the blocks so everyone one can see the colors. You can also lay out pencils in case anyone wants to sketch their design first.
3. Explain to all the guests that you would like everyone to decorate a wooden block for the baby. Make sure to decorate all sides. Have them initial, sign or write a message on one side of the block for the parents and baby. Note: the sharpie will bleed through the grain of wood and smear if you rub your hand over it before the ink soaks in. Liquid will also smear the ink.
4. Once they’re done, set them out on the table for everyone to see.
After the Baby Shower:
1. Collect all the blocks. If there are any letters missing, then finish the rest so the baby will have a full set.
2. Seal them with spray that’s environmentally and baby safe. We were recommended to use Vermont Natural Coating. It seals it nicely and minimal odor using it. Even though others say it’s safe for babies, I still would make sure the blocks don’t go into the baby’s mouth.
3. Let them dry according to the directions.
4. Deliver the beautiful, one-of-a-kind set of wooden baby blocks to the soon-to-be parents. They will love them!
Believe me. No matter how creative or artistic your guests are, they will have fun decorating wooden baby blocks. It’s fun to see what everyone comes up with and how much their personalities show through. The soon-to-be parents and baby will treasure them always. I know my friends do. All images of the baby blocks are curtesy of my friend Debby Chiang (the mother).
Love,
Jeannie

Some html experience is a plus but not required. We actually purchased a theme from Eclair Designs (Etsy) and had it all installed for us. She was easy to work with, and it was up and running in a day. Check out her designs here: https://www.etsy.com/shop/EclairDesign

Superb blog! Do you have any tips and hints for aspiring writers?
I’m hoping to start my own site soon but I’m a little
lost on everything. Would you advise starting with a free platform like WordPress or go for a paid option? There
are so many options out there that I’m totally overwhelmed ..
Any tips? Appreciate it!
