Now that it’s been warming up a lot in Texas, your going to be going through tons of water bottles. A great way to recycle those water bottles is for the kids to create a fun and easy DIY Sun Catcher to hang in the garden or from the trees in your yard. You and the family can enjoy the beautiful days outside with bright fun colors added to any front or backyard.
This is one of those projects that is so easy that it doesn’t take much time for you and the kids to do. This project can even be done outside so you can see how the colors shine through the bottles. All the supplies needed, you’ll probably already have around the house.
SUPPLIES
- Water bottles with lids
- Sharpies
- Scissors
- Box Cutter
- String
TIME TO DESIGN
Step 1: Grab all the colors of sharpies you can find and put them in the center of table to share.
Step 2: Everyone gets a water bottle.
Step 3: Start decorating the outside of your water bottle with any design you want using the sharpies.
Pro Mom Tip: Putting color on top of color doesn’t work well. You’ll start scratching or wiping off the original color.
Step 4: Once your happy with your design, than it’s time to grab the scissors.
Pro Mom Tip: Don’t decorate the bottom underside of the water bottle.
TIME TO CREATE
Step 5: You’ll need to cut the very bottom of the decorated water bottle.
Pro Mom Tip: I found it easier on some water bottles to cut the bottoms off with a box cutter.
Step 6: From the bottom of the water bottle, your going to cut around the water bottle while going up to make a very long swirl to the top.
Step 7: Take the bottle lid and poke a hole in it.
Step 8: Thread a string through the hole in the lid.
Step 9: Tie a big knot on the underside of the lid to keep it attached when hanging.
Step 10: Screw lid back onto the bottle and voila, you have a cool, colorful hanging swirling sun catcher.
These are so easy to create, I usually like to decorate 3 bottles at the same time to put them together as shown. You can stack the extras on top of the bottle with the lid so the string would just go through the open tops of the bottles to hang. That will keep them all together.
Pro Mom Tip: For a more finished look, I put a cap on the top bottle as well with the string pulled through a hole in the lid.
The kids will love decorating the yard hanging these with all the different colors shining in the sun and watching the swirls twirl in the wind. This would also make a great party, school or summer camp DIY kids craft idea. Now go have some fun in the sun.
Love,
Jeannie
